Invited Talk

"Context, Goals, Experiences, and Explanations"

David B. Leake, Indiana University, USA

The importance of explanation is widely recognized, but different communities may focus on very different aspects of explanation and tools for addressing them.  This talk provides a historical sampling of the roles of explanation in case-based reasoning (CBR), presenting relationships of explanation to the CBR cognitive model, results on how case-based reasoning can support explanation, and new directions on needs and methods for explanation within case-based reasoning systems and to support CBR applications.  This examination demonstrates the importance of context, goals, and experience in explanation.  In so doing, it highlights key questions---and perhaps potential answers---relevant to a range of explanation problems in computer and human-computer systems.
